CHARACTER SUMMARY

Similar to many of her Crest-bearing peers, Mercedes did not have kind beginnings. With the passing of her father before she was born, House Martritz fell to ruin and her mother married the baron of House Bartels, giving birth to Mercedes' younger brother Emile. As Mercedes and Emile were both in possession of a Crest, Baron Bartels viewed them as a means of expanding his influence within the nobility of the empire: Emile would carry on the Bartels name, and Mercedes would be a convenient new wife for Baron Bartels once she becomes of age, giving birth to more Crest-bearing heirs. Realizing that he had no fatherly affection for his children, least of all to his step-daughter, Mercedes' mother left House Bartels with her, leaving Emile behind. A small church took them in and Mercedes lived there for some time, abandoning the Bartels name and taking up her old family name of Martritz, until a wealthy merchant eventually adopted her for her bloodline and Crest. Although the priests refused to let her go, the merchant used his money to overwhelm the church, and Mercedes had no choice but to leave with him. While her adoptive father didn't mistreat her, he would constantly arrange marriage proposals for her with other noblemen with the intent of siring a Crest-bearing child, often against her wishes.

Enrolling in the Royal School of Sorcery and the Garreg Mach Monastery Officers Academy were her only means of delaying her fate in getting married off, and it is thankfully where she met the other members of the Blue Lions class and the player character, Byleth. It's through her relationships with her classmates and Byleth that allowed her to grow and develop past her tendency of simply accepting what others expected of her, allowing them to dictate the course of her life as simply being the will of the Goddess. Her decision to participate in the war to fight alongside Byleth and Dimitri to reclaim the kingdom later on was the first decision she made of her own free will, somehow managing to convince her adoptive father to let her go. This, of course, still didn't cause his marriage arrangements to cease; it isn't until Mercedes finally decides to confront him towards the end of the war that he ultimately relents, respecting her dream of devoting her life to help people in need.
